Department of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Hassett says Governor Jim Doyle's proposed budget protects the state's natural resources. Doyle's budget would reauthorize the state's Stewardship Fund to the year 2020, and increase the amount of money that can be borrowed for land purchases. Hassett told the legislature's Joint Finance Committee that some have asked if that price tag "isn't a bit too high." He says it's not, amounting to about 25 cents a week for each resident of the state. Doyle's budget also increases funding to combat invasive species. Hassett said the Doyle budget, which also increases funding to combat invasive species, is "responsible and practical," and reflects the value of the state's natural resources. He also noted that it contains no increase on fees to hunt or fish.
