A state lawmaker wants to encourage more veterans to share their service experience with classrooms around Wisconsin. State Representative Steve Wieckert (R-Appleton) says veterans can teach valuable lessons to students, by telling about the sacrifices they've made the high price that comes with freedom.
Wieckert is introducing legislation that would recognize veterans who visit classrooms for more than 20 hours. The Appleton Republican says students show a great deal of respect to veterans, and more should be encouraged to visit schools.
The bill would also extend Veterans Day to the entire week around November 11th. Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Executive Assistant Anthony Hardie says the measure is good for veterans and students by giving a needed boost to educating kids about the realities of war.
A legislative committee approved the bill Wednesday; it now heads to the Assembly floor.
