Federal funding for Wisconsin's SeniorCare prescription drug program is currently set to expire in June and officials have denied a request to extend the program to 2009. So, US Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) is taking a different approach by adding language to continue the program to a bill that will fund the War in Iraq.
However, President Bush is expected to veto the bill if it passes Congress. Kohl says that's largely because the version expected to pass the Senate and House includes a timetable for removing troops from Iraq.
Kohl says getting lawmakers to include the SeniorCare extension is a good first step though, and he's hoping future versions of the bill that the president may sign will still include the measure. Kohl says this route appears to be the best option for extending the program.
