Wisconsin Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison) says the Thompson case raises another question besides why were eight US Attorneys fired. What about the US Attorneys who have retained their positions? Is there political motivation there too?
Baldwin echoes sentiments in a New York Times editorial that questions the motive of US Attorney Steven Biskupic in Milwaukee for prosecuting the former civil servant on corruption charges while Democrat Jim Doyle was running against republican congressman Mark Green.
Baldwin questions whether US Attorneys, including Biskupic, have been instructed by the administration to follow a partisan agenda.
Baldwin says the abrupt action by the federal appeals court last week to overturn Thompson's conviction and release her from prison immediately begs the congressional question.
The US Attorney's Office in Milwaukee denies any political pressure in the Thompson case. Former democratic state Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, whose office helped in that investigation, is quoted as saying, if anything Steven Biskupic may have been too cautious because of the political implications.
