The Governor says a report that Georgia Thompson may have been pressured to change her testimony is "alarming."
The report in the current issue of Madison's " Isthmus " paper alleges that federal prosecutors offered the state employee leniency, if she agreed to testify against other members of Governor Jim Doyle's administration. Doyle says Thompson had already testified under oath that nobody had told her to do anything inappropriate.
Thompson reportedly rejected the deal, because she didn't have the information the prosecution was looking for.
The Governor says he was also surprised by allegations that US Attorney Steven Biskupic may have tried to get Thompson to change the testimony she gave under oath. Doyle, a former prosecutor, says that's something he's never done or even heard of being done.
Thompson was convicted of rigging a state travel contract, but an appeals court later overturned the decision and released her from prison . Doyle maintains he had no connection to the case. He says he would have been a "pretty strange target" in any investigation tied to the case, since he had no knowledge of the situation at the time.
