A state Senate committee is set to vote Tuesday on a bill from Senators Jon Erpenbach and Mike Ellis, regulating so-called "issue ads." Jay Heck with Common Cause in Wisconsin notes the bill has bipartisan support and is backed by Governor Jim Doyle. Heck says the ads have become a big problem in Wisconsin politics, as unregulated groups pour millions into media campaigns that impact elections here. There's plenty of opposition to the bill: Wisconsin Right to Life calls it the "Protection for Politicians Act", and claims it would prevent groups from distributing objective information about politicians' voting records.
