President Bush is making a new push for nuclear power as an alternative to foreign oil and that has one Wisconsin lawmakers smiling. State Representative Phil Montgomery (R-Green Bay) chaired a legislative committee, which earlier this year recommended Wisconsin lift its moratorium on building new nuclear power plants. He hopes the attention the president is giving the issue will increase the awareness of the viability of nuclear power.
Montgomery points out that Wisconsin currently gets 20 percent of its energy from nuclear power plants. He says the state may not be able to meet the growing demand for reliable and renewable energy, unless it seriously considers nuclear energy sources.
Wisconsin currently has three nuclear reactors at Kewaunee and Point Beach.
