A night of fireworks watching ended tragically for six people in Dane County Wednesday night. One person is dead. Five seriously injured.
Dane County Sheriff's Lieutenant Kurt Pierce says a vehicle with six people parked next to a quarry off Highway 12 north of Middleton to watch fireworks.
When it was over and they pulled away, the driver ended up driving over a cliff into the quarry. The car fell seventy feet and landed on its roof at the bottom of the quarry.
The driver was dead at the scene. Five others were taken to a Madison hospital with serious injuries.
Despite those injuries, one of the survivors was able to crawl out of the car and call 9-1-1 on a cell phone.
Lt. Pierce says they still don't know how or why the driver headed for the quarry instead of the road.
