UW-Green Bay to face Ohio State in Pre-Season NIT

For the first time in program history, the UW-Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team will participate in the preseason NIT.  The Phoenix will face Ohio State in the 2007 NIT Season Tip-Off.

It's the only game slated for national coverage in the opening round and will take place in Columbus on Monday, Nov. 12 at 8pm and be shown on ESPN2.  The winner of that game will take on the winner of the Columbia/Delaware State contest, with the regional winner advancing to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden Nov. 21.

Teen found guilty of murdering principal

After over six hours of deliberations on Thursday, a Sauk County jury returned a guilty verdict for 16-year-old Eric Hainstock on a charge of first degree intentional homicide. He'll be sentenced Friday morning and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Hainstock was accused of fatally shooting Principal John Klang last fall, while Klang tried to disarm him inside the school.

The defense had argued that Hainstock's actions were reckless, but he did not intend to kill Klang. They claim Hainstock brought guns to school because he was trying to get people to pay attention to the fact that other students picked on him.

But prosecutors built a case showing Hainstock often picked on other students himself, and that tensions with Klang had been building for weeks before the shooting took place.

UW could hike tuition 5.5 percent

Some University of Wisconsin students could see a 5.5 percent tuition hike this fall.

The UW Board of Regents will be asked next week to consider tuition increases at all four-year campuses. System spokesman Dave Giroux says that will amount to about a $251 annual increase for students at smaller campuses, while students at the UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee could see tuition climb by up to $330.

Some students won't see the cost of going to school climb though. The proposal would freeze tuition at all two-year UW campuses.

The proposed tuition increases are based on the state budget from the Joint Finance Committee. However, Giroux says students could be asked to pay more down the road, if the final budget cuts more.

Giroux says the proposed hike is the lowest dollar increase in five years.
