Clay cleared to play for Badgers

The University of Wisconsin football team received some good news over the weekend.  Racine Park running back John Clay has been cleared to play this season by the NCAA Clearing House.  Clay is one of the highest rated running back recruits in the country.

The Badgers are ranked 7th in the Top 25 Coaches Poll and now find themselves ranked 7th in the Associated Press top 25 poll which came out over the weekend.

Brewers cough up another lead, fall to Reds

The Milwaukee Brewers blew a 5-0 lead and fell to the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 at Miller Park on Sunday afternoon.

Pinch-hitter Javier Valentin hit a bases-loaded, 2-run double off of Scott Linebrink in the 8th to lead the Cincinnati Reds to the win.

Chris Capuano's bad luck continued, although he didn't get saddled with the loss.  But Capuano did cough up the early lead and the Brewers dropped to 0-16 in games that were started by Capuano.

Prince Fielder clubbed his league leading 38th home run of the season.  Ryan Braun, Bill Hall and J.J. Hardy also homered in the loss.  The Brewers have now dropped 6 of 7 and 10 of the last 13 games.

The Brewers begin a crucial 9-game road trip in Arizona against the Diamondbacks tonight.

Vikings work out Ferguson

The Minnesota Vikings worked out free agent wide receiver Robert Ferguson on Sunday, just two days after he was released by the Green Bay Packers .

The Vikings had preliminary discussions with Ferguson's agent, but the two sides have no deal to report at this time.

Ferguson is also expected to visit with the Houston Texans soon.

Packers first team offense encouraging

After a poor start in the preseason opener at Pittsburgh, the Green Bay Packers number one offensive unit rebounded to score on three of their first four possessions in Saturday night's 48-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The first offense accomplished more of what coach Mike McCarthy was looking for.

The Packers 48 points was the most they've scored in an exhibition game since 1938, when they defeated the Cedar Rapids Crush 75-0, and it was their most points in a preseason game against an NFL opponent.

Runningback Brandon Jackson rushed for 54 yards on 13 carries with 42 yards coming on 9 carries with the first offensive unit.

The Packers defense got in on the act as well.  They forced six Seattle turnovers and ran a pair of fumbles back for touchdowns.

The Packers were off yesterday.  They practice tonight and Tuesday afternoon before facing the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night at Lambeau Field.

Dad talks to legislative family committee about fatherhood

The Special Committee on Strengthening Wisconsin Families meets today, talking about, well, strengthening Wisconsin families.

Peter Kerr , Communications Director of Milwaukee Fatherhood Collaborative, has heard from both Democrats and Republicans in the legislature who agree with the intentions of this bill, which aims to keep both parents in a child's life, not just the mother.

Kerr says the standard "cookie cutter" response of "every second weekend" for the father isn't good enough. He says fathers get a pretty raw deal in what he calls "the meat grinder: Family Court of Wisconsin." Representative Don Pridemore has been pushing his legislation that aims to equal physical placement of children to the highest degree possible. Kerr says it's time to get it done.

Kerr, who'll be giving a presentation on 50/50 placement to the Committee, says Americans need to stand up and say they believe in equality, in families and in respect.

NOTE: Meeting is Monday, August 20, 2007 at 10:00am in room 411 South at the State Capitol. Rep. Steve Kestell, Chair.
