Packers sign fullback this week

The Green Bay Packers released safety Marviel Underwood yesterday and filled his roster spot by signing free agent fullback Erryn Cobb.

Cobb is a rookie free agent from Northwestern, where he began his career as a linebacker before moving to fullback in 2004.  Cobb was the Wildcats' starting tightend in 2005 and played a combination of tight end and fullback last year.

Morency is due back soon with Packers

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy says starting running back Vernand Morency will be back soon, but won't play tomorrow night when the Packers face the Jacksonville Jaguars in the teams third preseason game.

Morency hurt his knee in the Packers first training camp practice and hasn't practiced since.

McCarthy said Morency might make it back in time to play in the Packers' final preseason game at Tennessee next Thursday.  If not, he'll be ready for the September 9th regular season opener against Philadelphia at Lambeau Field.

Carimi wins battle at Left Tackle for Badgers

Wisconsin redshirt freshman Gabe Carimi has won the battle for the starting left tackle job with the Wisconsin Badgers , beating out Danny Kaye and Jake Bscherer.

Jake Bscherer moved back to left tackle and will back up Carimi, while Kaye moves to backup center.

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said, "I think he came in with an attitude to take it.  I think all of them did but he is the one that proved it time and time again and really got better as camp came along."

The Badgers are expected to name their starting quarterback today.  They'll open the season Sept. 1 against Washington State at Camp Randall.

Gross leads Brewers past Diamondbacks

Gabe Gross clubbed a grand slam to cap a 5-run 7th as the Milwaukee Brewers knocked off the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 in Phoenix on Tuesday night.

Since returning from a stint in the minors, Gross is hitting .421 (8 for 19) with 3 home runs and 8 rbi's.

J.J. Hardy went 3 for 4 with a run-scoring single and Rickie Weeks added an rbi triple for the Brewers.  It gives the Brewers their 4th road win in the last 5 games.

Dave Bush allowed two runs on six hits over six innings with one walk and strikeouts.  He got his first win since a July 31st relief appearance against the New York Mets.

The final game of the series is tonight.  The Brewers send Jeff Suppan to the mound against Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb.

Action delayed on new sprinkler requirements

sprinkler082107.jpg Wisconsin firefighters say sprinklers can save lives, and the Madison Fire Department provided a demonstration to that effect Tuesday morning. They set fire to two makeshift apartment models, one with sprinklers, one without.

The one with sprinklers was quickly put out as the fire was just starting. The furniture inside was left wet, but barely singed. The unit without sprinklers quickly grew to a full inferno, which Fire Marshal Ed Ruckriegel said almost nobody could survive in.

The demonstration came as lawmakers are being asked to consider new building regulations, which include a rule change that requires more multi-family housing units to have fire sprinklers. State regulations currently require any housing complex with at least 21 units to install sprinklers. State Commerce Secretary Mary Burke told a legislative panel Tuesday that the agency wants to lower that number to any new construction containing at least three units, so the state is in line with international standards.

Opponents say Commerce doesn't have the authority to change the requirement, only the legislature does. Leon Church, a home builder from the Fox River Valley, also argued the requirement adds to the cost of new construction. He says his projects with sprinklers have seen an extra $6,000 per unit spent when sprinklers are required.

Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin president Rick Gale says opponents are using technicalities to protect their bottom line. He says the issue comes down to cutting costs or saving lives.

A legislative panel on Tuesday approved the overall changes to the state's building code on a 5-2 vote. However, action on the new sprinkler requirement was delayed and the provision was sent to the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules for further review.
