Do biofuels increase greenhouse gasses? A new study appears to conclude that biofuels may do more harm to the environment than good, although Madison ethanol advocate Brett Hulsey questions that conclusion. "What the study tries to say is that a person putting ethanol in their car in Wisconsin, is going to lead more rainforest burning in Soth America," said Hulsey, who called that "a real stretch."
Hulsey, who's also a member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors, says ethanol producers here in Wisconsin are always looking for greater efficiencies. According to findings published in Science magazine, as the price of major biofuels corn and sugar cane increase, more and more developing countries are clearing rainforest and grasslands to grow them — thus adding to greenhouse gasses.
