Is the state bankrolling genocide in Darfur ? The Wisconsin Senate Thursday debated a resolution urging the Investment Board to divest from companies doing business in Sudan. Sen. Sheila Harsdorf (R-River Falls) was disappointed: she'd authored a bill requiring that divestment. There was not unanimous support even for this watered down resolution . Sen. Carol Roessler (R-Oshkosh) argued that is not the legislature's responsibility to direct the investment board. In December, President Bush signed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act, which passed both houses of congress unanimously, authorizing state and local governments to adopt targeted Sudan divestment policies.
