No surprise here: AAA finds it costs more to drive. The auto club's latest edition of "Your Driving Costs" shows the cost of driving a passenger vehicle in the U.S. has increased nearly two cents per mile in the last year, to an average of just over 54 cents. "The 2008 estimate of $8100 to own and operate a new passenger car some 15,000 miles, this year is up about $300," says Pam Moen with AAA Wisconsin says. Surveys also show motorists are making do, by driving smaller cars, driving less, and driving more efficiently. Decreases on things such as maintenance and insurance were more than offset by increases in other categories, especially in the cost of a tank of gasoline.
