Badgers open Big Ten play by routing Ohio State

The 23rd ranked Wisconsin Badger men’s basketball team opened Big Ten play this afternoon and had their way with 15th ranked Ohio State, beating the Buckeyes 65-43 before 17-thousand plus at the Kohl Center.

Trevon Hughes poured in 16 points to lead all scorers.  He helped the Badgers to 10 of 21 (47.6%) from 3-point range.  The Buckeyes converted just 30.8% of their 3-point attempts.

Jordan Taylor added 12 points and Jon Leuer 11 for Wisconsin (11-2).  Ohio State (10-3) got 14 points from William Buford in the loss.

Body of missing woman may have been found

Police say a body found Wednesday afternoon in Adams County is likely that of 43-year-old Theresa Still, who has been missing from Altoona since in Eau Claire County since Sunday night. [Read more...]

Doyle decision was ’09 bombshell

There’s little doubt Governor Jim Doyle’s decision to not seek a third term was the top state political story of 2009. It blind-sided most Wisconsin political observers, including UW political scientist Charles Franklin. “It sure surprised me,” says Franklin of Doyle’s mid-August announcement. Franklin says a big reason why Doyle caught people off guard is because his reelection campaign was proceeding with fundraising, giving every indication that a third term effort was in the works. No fireworks for one New Year’s Eve event

It’s a sign of the times, a big New Year’s Eve event in Wisconsin’s capital city drops the fireworks.

It’s not a cost-saving measure, though. In fact, all the money that would have been spent on the elaborate fireworks display at the annual U.S. Bank Eve celebration will instead be given to a local homeless organization in desperate need of the funds.

“It didn’t seem quite right to spend the money on fireworks when we could be donating it to an organization like Porchlight to help the homeless in the community.” [Read more...]
