Homeowners could see more property tax relief, under a proposed state constitutional amendment.
State Senator Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay) says the property tax burden for homeowners continues to grow, with homes covering 70.6-percent of property taxes. As that number has continued to climb, Hansen says businesses have seen their share of property taxes continue to drop.
With many families struggling financially, Hansen says lawmakers need to ease that burden. That's why he plans to introduce the Homeowner Property Tax Exemption, a constitutional amendment that would exempt the first $60,000 of a home's value from school-based property taxes. Hansen says it would reduce the average property tax bill by about $300 a year.
The proposal would need to pass two consecutive sessions of the Legislature.
