A proposed constitutional amendment to target property tax relief to homeowners is coming under attack from perhaps an unlikely source: Wisconsin Property Taxpayers, Incorporated.
The proposal from legislative Democrats aims to amend the state constitution to exempt the first $60,000 of a home's value from school-based property tax rolls.
Spokesman Mike Birkley says the proposal would cost the state over a half billion dollars in lost school taxes. He questions where that money would have to be made up.
Birkley says it would only benefit about two-thirds of property taxpayers because renters would get no relief under the proposal.
The plan would need approval by voters in a statewide referendum.
