Suppan to make rehab start in Appleton

Milwaukee Brewers  pitcher Jeff Suppan will make a rehab start for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday, August 15.  The right-hander will face the Beloit Snappers when the Timber Rattlers begin an eight-game homestand that could see the team break the franchise single season attendance record.

Suppan was 5-8 with a 5.27 ERA in 21 starts for the Brewrs this season before going on the disabled list with a rib cage strain.  He last start for Milwaukee was against the Washington Nationals on July 27 at Miller Park.  Suppan threw off the mound on Wednesday and was declared ready for the starting assignment in the minors.

Driver charged in baby buggy death

Prosecutors in Wood County have charged 49-year-old Brian Witkus with negligent vehicular homicide, following a crash between a minivan and horse-drawn buggy on Wednesday that killed a six week old girl.

Witkus reportedly admitted to police that he was reaching down to pick up a book on the floor of his minivan when the crash occurred. Witkus said he took two hydrocodone pills earlier in the day. Police also reported he appeared impaired and failed field sobriety tests.

However, prosecutors say they don't yet have enough to charge him with a drunken driving homicide.

Witkus is also accused of, but not yet charged with, a separate drunk driving crash in May.

A judge jailed him on a $10,000 cash bond.

Bill signed allowing 10-year-olds to hunt

Kids as young as ten can now legally hunt in Wisconsin. Governor Jim Doyle signed legislation Thursday that lowers the minimum hunting age from 12 to 10-years-old. The young hunters will have to be with an adult mentor, they can only share one gun, and the adult has to be within arm’s length.

Wisconsin Wildlife Federation Executive Director George Meyer says it should not be dangerous and issues the strictest requirements for youth hunting in the country. He says about 33 states allow some form of youth hunting for those under the age of 12.

Meyers says it’s a good way to get the next generation involved in hunting, which he says is necessary to promote game management and keeping Wisconsin’s deer herd in check.
