Schneider says Doyle has ‘lost his power’

The dean of the Wisconsin Assembly says Governor Jim Doyle may have announced his intentions too soon. “He has lost his power, and nobody will really care what he thinks about anything,” says state Representative Marlin Scheider. “In my view he should have waited until perhaps January, going into the waning months of the legislative session.”

And the Wisconsin Rapids Democrat believes Doyle was originally planning to seek a third term in office. “I think his plan was to get the state out of the structural deficit that the Thompson years had provided, and that he was going to use that as the basis for running,” Schneider says. “But the bottom fell out everything with the national economy, so he was unable to recover.”

But Schneider also says he understands Doyle’s decision to announce his intentions now–to give Democrats enough time to organize a campaign strategy.

No charges for officer who sent lewd texts to teen

A former high school resources officer with the Milton Police Department will not face criminal charges, after he was accused of sending lewd text messages to a female student. Officer Jason Casper was accused of inappropriately touching a student when she was 17 and then sending her text messages when she turned 18. Milton Police Chief Jerry Schuetz says an investigation of the case found the girl reciprocated with text messages of her own, so the conduct did not rise to the level of criminal charges.

Casper resigned as a Milton police officer, but was not decertified as a Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer. Schuetz says Casper could seek employment in another department.
