AG bows out of registry challenge

The Attorney General says he will not defend the state against a challenge to domestic partner registries.

Wisconsin Family Action has asked the State Supreme Court to strike down the registries, based on a 2006 Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage or any similar legal status for same-sex couples. Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says that amendment is the reason why he cannot represent Wisconsin against the petition to overturn the law.

The registries were created by a provision in the state budget and went into effect earlier this month.

In a statement, Van Hollen says his decision isn’t based on a policy disagreement, but on his oath to uphold the state Constitution.

The Supreme Court has not yet decided if it will take up the case. If it does, the state would likely have to hire an outside attorney to defend the law.

Pedestrian killed on LCO Reservation is 2nd this month

For the second time in three weeks, a member of northern Wisconsin’s Lac Courte Oreilles tribe has been struck and killed. Lac Courte Oreilles police and the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the death of a man who was hit by a vehicle Thursday morning.

The victim, identified as 42 year-old LCO tribal member Dennis Miller, was found by officers who were called to a residence on Round Lake School Road at about 3:23 a.m. Miller was dead when officers arrived. His body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office in St. Paul for autopsy. The name of the driver has not been released and the incident remains under investigation.

Miller’s is the second early morning death of a pedestrian on the reservation this month. On Sunday, August 2, 47 year-old Cynthia Gordon was struck as she walked along Sawyer County County Highway K at around 2:30 a.m. Gordon died at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital, and the driver has been charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

Stimulus dollars to keep bus wheels spinning

More than $27.5 million in federal stimulus dollars awarded to Wisconsin transit is a sigh of relief, according to a transit advocate.  Kerry Thomas of Transit Now says services in the southeastern part of the state were facing major cuts until the money from Washington came in.

Especially dire was Milwaukee County which was facing a 30 percent service reduction but will now scale back about 5 percent. However Thomas says the money from Washington has granted floundering transit “a one year reprieve” but problems will resurface in 2011.

The Fox Valley is especially sensitive in coming times as the region will see a census recount that will cause their federal funding status to be reclassified meaning a million fewer dollars coming in annually.

The money headed to Wisconsin is part of $5.7 billion the Obama administration has directed toward transit.

Rouse suffers hamstring injury

Aaron Rouse was in the mix for one of the backup safety jobs for the Green Bay Packers.  Last night (Thursday), Rouse’s pursuit of that job took a hit when he suffered what appeared to be a significant hamstring injury.  Rouse was taken off the field in a cart.

Packers rookie left guard T.J. Lang was fined $7,500 by the league for a clip in Saturday night’s game against the Cleveland Browns.  Lang said he plans to appeal.

Thursday night’s practice was the final two-a-day of the summer.  The Packers are off today and will face the Buffalo Bills in the second exhibition game of the preseason tomorrow night (7pm).
