FDL county approves Mercury Marine incentives

The Fond du Lac County Board last night passed three resolutions that establish the biggest chunk of city-county incentives designed to keep Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac. The county will borrow up to $50 million to use as incentives to retain the outboard motor maker. The annual debt on that loan will primarily be paid through a half-percent county sales tax, which also was created by board action.

County Supervisor Herb Ottery was in the minority believing the county should have weathered the storm and let the company decide its own fate.

County Supervisor Jim Kiser, a local organizer of taxpayer relief rallies, found himself actually voting for the sales tax. He says it was preferable to putting the burden on property taxes to save the county’s largest employer.

Tonight the Fond du Lac City Council will consider $3 million in incentives for Mercury Marine.

State getting federal funds to replace vehicles

Wisconsin is getting federal money to help buy new clean energy vehicles.

Governor Jim Doyle says the state will receive $15 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to replace hundreds of older vehicles with new fuel-efficient models. The money will go towards the purchase of over 500 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles, for over 119 communities and businesses across the state.

Doyle says the funds will help purchase a wide-range of vehicles, ranging from small electric cars to large utility vehicles.

The Governor says replacing existing vehicle fleets with alternative energy options will lead to other costs savings. He estimates the move could conserve over 1.6 million gallons of fuel a year, as older vehicles are taken off the roads.

The state is also receiving $1 million in federal funding to help add new bio-fuel retail locations.
