Tolzien named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

Scott TolzienWisconsin junior quarterback Scott Tolzien was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Wisconsin Badgers to a  Big Ten opening 38-30 win over Michigan State.

Tolzien completed 19 of 31 passes for 243 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes. 

Tolzien leads the Big Ten and ranks 13th in the country in passing efficiency at 164.3.  In four games, Tolzien has thrown for 8 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions.

Rodgers leads Packers past Rams

John KuhnAaron Rodgers passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Green Bay Packers (2-1) to a 36-17 win over the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

The Packers started slow, with three first quarter possessions in Rams territory leading to Mason Crosby field goals.  But the Packers picked up the pace in the second quarter as John Kuhn (pictured) scored one of his two touchdowns and Donald Driver hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers. Brewers end home season with 6-5 loss to Phillies

The Milwaukee Brewers ended the home portion of their schedule with a 6-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Miller Park on Sunday.  The Brewers will take today off and then play the final week of the season on the road, starting with a three-game series at Colorado followed by a 3-game weekend series in St. Louis.

Jimmy Rollins hit his 21st home run of the season for the Phillies and Ryan Howard tied Prince Fielder for the major league RBI lead.  The win for the Phillies cut the team’s magic number to 3 to clinch their 3rd straight American League East.

The Brewers finished the season, drawing 3,037,451 fans, averaging 37,499 fans per game.  That’s just off the record setting figures of a year ago. 

The Brewers got home runs from Mike Cameron (23rd) and Mat Gamel (5th) in the loss.  The Brewers are 2-games under .500 (77-79) with six games left.

Private colleges offer ‘ideal’ health insurance to students

There’s a lot of talk lately about health care, but students at Wisconsin’s Private Colleges needn’t worry.

The head of the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) says between 25-30 percent of students don’t have health care when they start college, especially now that many aren’t covered by their parents who may have lost their jobs — and their insurance.

“So we wanted to develop a plan that would address the uninsured, that would provide coverage for people that don’t have coverage, and be cost-effective for the students.”

WAICU President and CEO Rolf Wegenke, Ph.D. (pronounce) says many existing student health insurance plans have many exclusions when compared to traditional plans. He says many student plans don’t include coverage for mental health, wellness, basic immunizations, sports and alcohol-related injuries.

“All the kinds of things that would happen to a student, these student health plans don’t cover.”

Walking in Red Stride

People in Green Bay today are taking diabetes in stride, red stride in this case. The city is hosting the first of the Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes walks in Wisconsin this season. Event spokesperson Christine Schaeberle says the money raised helps fund research to prevent, cure and manage the disease and provide services to hundreds of communities.

Schaeberle says look around at the event and you’ll Red Striders, walkers wearing red hats to signify they are living with the disease. There is also a certain place for Red Striders to gather and meet other diabetics.

Those interested can assemble a team or walk individually. Upcoming walks will include Janesville, Madison and Racine.
