Packers on record pace for penalties

Mike McCarthyThe Green Bay Packers finished the 2008 season next to last in penalties and last in yards lost by penalty.

Barring a drastic change in habits, the Packers could be even worse this year.

Through the first five games of the season, the Packers are on pace to commit more penalties for more yards than they did in 2008 when they committed 110 penalties for 984 yards.  So far this year, the Packers have been flagged for infractions 43 times for 359 yards.  They’re on pace to commit just under 140 (138) penalties for more than 11-hundred yards.  Both would be franchise records. Recall has tongues wagging

People in Australia may never utter the phrase “throw another tongue on the barbie,” but that unlikely piece of Wisconsin cows is making it to the table in some parts of the world – and maybe closer to home than you might expect.

Following news of a recall in Wisconsin involving over 5500 pounds of cow tongue, we wondered: who eats this stuff? Casey Langan of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation says tongues are actually a good business overseas. And Langen says there’s a good chance many of us have eaten beef tongue without knowing: many times it’s made into sausage, along with all those other parts we don’t want to think about.

911 call from seven hour standoff

The 911 call from inside the home where a seven hour standoff in Northwest Wisconsin took place has been released. The incident Saturday involved a 19-year-old trapped inside while his drunken father fired shot after shot with his handgun, trying to injure or kill his son and his three friends.

During the 23 minute call to dispatchers, Zach Christianson told where his father was, how much ammunition he had and warned that his father disliked cops.

The teen was remarkably calm during most of the ordeal but fear and concern for his father could also be heard on the tape.

Investigators have not said what set off the incident between the father and son that led to shots being fired.

Zach and his friends, two 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old were eventually able to escape. The standoff ended when 43-year-old Daniel Christianson tried to flee his house, pointed his gun at two Hudson police officers and was shot by one of them. Christianson is in critical condition after surgery Monday in St. Paul.

Text ban bill in Senate vote

It could only cover teen drivers, but the state Senate today is set to take up legislation which would ban texting while behind the wheel. And state Senator Alan Lasee says he’s prepared an amendment to restore his bill (SB 103) to the original intent: an across the board texting ban for Wisconsin drivers, regardless of their age.

The DePere Republican admits that a lot of the media horror stories surrounding texting seem to involve younger drivers, but he believes texting while behind the wheel is a “terrible practice” for drivers of any age.

AUDIO: Senator Alan Lasee (:14 MP3)

Lasee says there have been fatal accidents in Wisconsin due to texting, and he notes that both the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and the wireless industry are pushing for a nationwide ban. Lasee’s legislation passed the state Senate in the last session of the legislature, but was never brought up for a vote in the Assembly.
