It could only cover teen drivers, but the state Senate today is set to take up legislation which would ban texting while behind the wheel. And state Senator Alan Lasee says he’s prepared an amendment to restore his bill (SB 103) to the original intent: an across the board texting ban for Wisconsin drivers, regardless of their age.

The DePere Republican admits that a lot of the media horror stories surrounding texting seem to involve younger drivers, but he believes texting while behind the wheel is a “terrible practice” for drivers of any age.

Lasee says there have been fatal accidents in Wisconsin due to texting, and he notes that both the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and the wireless industry are pushing for a nationwide ban. Lasee’s legislation passed the state Senate in the last session of the legislature, but was never brought up for a vote in the Assembly.
