Bill targets religious exemption in abuse statutes

An end to faith healing? Legislation is proposed which would close a religious exemption clause in the state’s child abuse statutes. In the wake of the prosecution and conviction of a Marathon County couple whose diabetic daughter died after they prayed over her rather than seeking medical treatment, legislation is proposed which would close a religious exemption clause in the state’s child abuse statutes.

State Representative Terese Berceau (D-Madison) says the decision to charge Dale and Leilani Neumann with reckless homicide in daughter Kara’s death does not represent a solution to the issue. “We couldn’t save her while she was alive, and doctors are saying that she could have been saved one hour before she died, if they had known the condition she was in,” said Berceau. “So, when people say ‘well it works because we can prosecute them,’ yes, but after the child is dead.” Berceau said child advocates are supporting her measure (AB-590) over one from state Senator Lena Taylor (SB-384). “I did work with all these groups to get their opinion, and basically they just said, bottom line, just delete that portion of the statute that gives people this religious defense. I would say, look at the supporters of my bill, versus the supporters of Senator Taylor’s.” [Read more...]

Holiday travelers warned to drive legally, safely

Law enforcement agencies are keeping a close eye on motorists through the holiday weekend.

As holiday travelers and deer hunters hit the highways, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation works to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads throughout the deer hunting and Thanksgiving holiday period.

“Law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force watching for those who are speeding, not wearing their seatbelts, maybe drinking and driving.”

The DOT’s Michael Goetzman says traffic deaths were down last year during Thanksgiving, and he hopes that will continue to be the trend.

“Last year we had nine people killed in traffic crashes during the four-day Thanksgiving holiday period. That’s down five from the five-year average of 14, so we’re hopeful that that kind of a tren will continue.”

Goetzman attributes the lower number of traffic fatalities to safer cars, the primary seatbelt law, and generally smarter drivers.

Motorists might encounter only limited road construction and lane restrictions during the holiday travel period, as most projects have already been completed. The biggest inconvenience for drivers could be on I-94 from Kenosha to the Illinois line, where a major re-construction project is taking place.

A special speed enforcement effort will be held on Tuesday throughout the state.

Gun deer hunt gets underway

DNR photoA fall tradition gets underway across Wisconsin today, as the nine day gun deer hunt begins.

Although license sales were a bit down earlier this month, officials with the Department of Natural Resources are still hoping for a strong turnout.

For those heading out, Greg Matthews with the DNR says safety is one of their top messages this year. There were nine accidents during the 2008 season, with one fatality. Despite that, Matthews says it remains one of the safest sports in the state because of the safety classes most hunters have to take.
