Doyle to attend Copenhagen conference

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has announced that he will attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark from December 14-18. Doyle, who will attend the global conference as part of a delegation of governors and premiers from around the world, said he plans to showcase Wisconsin as a leader in clean-energy jobs, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“With a global focus on climate change, Wisconsin is well positioned to become a worldwide leader in a clean energy economy,” Doyle said in a statement. “We have the hardest workers and high end manufacturers, the brightest researchers and some of the best natural resources in the world. By advancing renewable fuels and alternative energy, we can create jobs in Wisconsin and take on the pressing challenge of climate change.” [Read more...]

Rally at Capitol steps

Rally at Capitol steps

Pro-choice groups demand to be heard in the health care debate. Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton says women ought to be demanding equal treatment in any health care reform – and that includes access to abortion. “We want honest health care reform, and stay out of our decision making on medical choices,” Lawton told a rally on the State Street steps of the Capitol in Madison. “Just give us full insurance coverage in the same way that men are given full coverage, no amendments to it.” [Read more...]

The Wisconsin Democrat said sending more servicemen and women could further destabilize Afghanistan and Pakistan, which would make it more difficult to defeat Taliban insurgents and to combat al-Qaida. Feingold told reporters he’ll try to block funding for the troop increase. [Read more...]

Cracking down on puppy mills

Breeders who fail to take care of their dogs could face stiff new penalties in Wisconsin, under legislation signed into law by Governor Jim Doyle on Tuesday.

The bill would require all dog sellers and breeders to be inspected and licensed by the state. It also creates standards for dog sales, regulates conditions of breeder facilities, and allows the state to revoke or suspend the license of a facility that fails to meet the standards.

Governor Doyle says the change is needed because Wisconsin has had too few regulations and inspections, along with too little authority to shut down irresponsible breeders. He says the state has been a magnet for so-called puppy mills, where dogs are often kept in filthy conditions are bred for sale as quickly as possible with little regard for their health.

Doyle says it’s an important move in making sure innocent animals are protected and to end the heart breaking stories of animals being abused. He says it will also help to protect responsible breeders who actually take care of the animals they raise.
