Going solar at the Capitol

Workers hoist solar panels onto the roof of the Capitol.

The Governor is hoping for some sunshine at the state Capitol building.

Several new solar panels are being installed on the roof of the Capitol building, as part of a campaign to promote the renewable energy source. Governor Jim Doyle says the 40 panels will generate enough energy to heat an average home and will significantly help to reduce carbon emissions.

Doyle says it’s one of many efforts to increase the use of renewable energy sources in Wisconsin, since the state needs to focus more on how to produce its own power. Wisconsin relies heavily on coal, natural gas, and petroleum for its energy needs, which have to be bought outside of the state. As a result, Doyle says increasing the use of energy sources such as wind and solar can help keep those dollars in the Badger State. [Read more...]

DNR deer experts evaluate hunt amid calls for their heads

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resiurces promises a review of deer management practices. There are calls for a change in the way the DNR manages Wisconsin’s deer herd, after this year’s hunt produced the smallest kill in 27 years. But big game manager Keith Warnke of the agency says there’s a re-evaluation EVERY year. He says the low numbers from the November gun-season were not unexpected.

“Overall, the state’s deer population is lower than it has been in several years,” says Warnke. “That we knew was coming. That was a result of herd reduction in some units. It’s also the result of herd reduction efforts. It’s the result of Earn-a-Buck efforts as well.” [Read more...]

Halt December hunt, say lawmakers

A call to pull the plug on the December antlerless deer hunt. With hunters registering the fewest deer in more than 25 years during the just ended nine day deer season, there’s call for cancellation of the antlerless hunt, from state Representatives Dean Kaufert and Scott Gunderson.

“This is about really, the future of deer hunting in Wisconsin,” says Gunderson. “We all know how important that deer hunting is to Wisconsin, that hunting heritage. Not to mention – and this isn’t why we hunt – but it (the 9 day season) does generate a billion dollars.” [Read more...]
