Governor vetoes UW board regional diversity bill

Governor Jim Doyle vetoes a bill (Senate Bill 223) that requires members of the UW Board of Regents to come from all geographical areas of the state. Michael Moscicke (moh-SIHK-ee), government relations director with United Council of UW Students, is very disappointed.

The bill passed the legislature in November. It would have required that at least one member of the university’s governing board comes from each of seven regions of the state. Currently, 12 out of the 18 regents are from Dane or Milwaukee county. [Read more...]

Oshkosh expects Army deal to stand

A military contract, valued at about two billion dollars to Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corporation, may be in jeopardy. The Government Accountability Office said a challenge mounted by Oshkosh rivals, BAE Systems, and Navistar International, was valid in key areas of procurement. The G.A.O.’s Michael Golden said his agency’s review led them to conclude that the U.S. Army, which awarded the contract for medium-duty trucks to Oshkosh in August, made a flawed decision. The G.A.O. recommended that the Army reevaluate the selection and terminate the contract if Oshkosh is found ”to not offer the best value.” [Read more...]

Green Bay women’s basketball makes appearance in top 25

For the fourth time in seven seasons and the first under head coach Matt Bollant, the UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team is ranked in the Top 25 AP Poll.  Green Bay received 94 points to crack the poll after winning their 27th consecutive regular season game over the weekend, starting the season with a 9-0 record.

Prior to this week’s ranking, the earliest Green Bay has been in the poll was Dec. 16, 2002.

The highest Green Bay has been ranked in the polls was 16th during the 2002-03 season.  That same year, the Phoenix concluded the remainder of the season ranked 21st with a 20-1 record beating Washington in the first round of the NCAA tournament before falling to LSU in the second round.

During the 2004-05 season Green Bay did not crack the poll until mid February.  the 24th-ranked Phoenix went on to finish the season with a 7-1 record before losing to Maryland in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Green Bay is one of 10 teams in the AP Poll without a loss this season.  The Lady Phoenix will try to push their record to 10-0 when they host in-state rival Marquette this Saturday at the Kress Events Center (7pm).

Packers win, despite continued mistakes

Aaron RodgersIf I would have told you that Aaron Rodgers, who had thrown at least 1-touchdown pass in 19 previous games, would have gone without a scoring strike on Sunday against the Bears, the thought of a loss to the Packers division rivals would have likely entered into your head.

Yes, Rodgers was shutout, but Ryan Grant had his best performance of the season, including a 62 yard touchdown run on the Green Bay Packers first offensive play from scrimmage and the Packers went on to win 21-14 in Chicago.  Grant finished with 137 yards on 20 carries and the Packers only two touchdowns.

The Packers got two more take/aways, interceptions by Charles Woodson and Nick Collins, but Woodson should have had three.  The Packers also coughed the ball up twice, which meant the give/away, take/away stat was even for the day. [Read more...]

Winter time is brine time

madsno18More and more Wisconsin roadways are being treated with a salty solution. While it may seem like some highway maintenance vehicles are spraying water on the highway, what they’re really doing is applying salt brine to the pavement to help prevent frost or ice from forming on the road’s surface.

“What you find is, if you liquefy the salt and apply it, typically it’s about a third as much in terms of the raw quantity of salt that you’re actually using to get the same result,” says Mike Sproul, the Wisconsin DOT’s winter maintenance engineer. [Read more...]
