Recalled vaccine not unsafe, merely ineffective

Despite a recall on an H1N1 vaccine, it is still safe. Approximately 14,700 doses that were distributed to providers throughout the state are included in the recall, according to Dan Hopfensperger, director of the state’s immunization program. “We are contacting them directly, to let them know if they have not administered the vaccine, they should take it . . . out of their inventory,” says Hopfensperger. Lawmakers clash over medical marijuana

Supporters of medical marijuana made  their case heard at the Capitol Tuesday.  Lawmakers held a hearing on the bill, which would allow patients suffering from a variety of medical conditions to use cannabis as part of their treatment. State Senator Jon Erpenbach (D-Waunakee) says it’s about compassionate care for those who see marijuana as the quickest and easiest way to ease their pain, but currently have to break the law to use it. Thompson predicts “far left, hard left” health care compromise

President Barack Obama is hoping for a health care bill by Christmas. Will he get his gift? That question was posed Tuesday to former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson. “Well, they’re on the ten yard line, they’re in the red zone, and whether or not they’re going to be able to get it across the finish line is anybody’s guess,” Thompson told WIBA. “I think they will.” [Read more...]

Accused killer claimed self defense

A man accused of a violent murder in a small community in northwestern Wisconsin last month told an arresting officer that he was defending himself from the dead man. Wayne Rouillard was back in Polk County Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. The 62 year-old resident of the Village of Luck is charged with first degree murder for the November killing of 61-year old Stephen Dahlstrom, of Bogota, Columbia. Rouillard was arrested at the scene where Dahlstrom was killed in the garage of a rural Luck residence. [Read more...]

A disease that many think has died out is actually on the rise. Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis in men. Weight is not always an indicator of gout but the disease occurs more frequently in obese people which is on the rise says a clinical professor of family medicine at UW-Madison.
