Stores lack last minute deals

Businesses are carrying less merchandise this holiday after stocking way too much last season, according to a marketing expert. Dennis Garrett of the College of Business Administration at Marquette University says the result is last minute sales are not as good for customers this year.

“They (businesses) are trying to make sure they can move their inventory as much as they can, as high a price point as they can before the holiday comes,” says Garrett.

Meanwhile mom and pop stores in Wisconsin are trying to compete with the malls and big box stores during a tough economy. If you see an item at a small business that you can buy cheaper at the department store, Garrett suggest you ask the mom and pop if they’d lower the price. Often the small retailers are willing to work with you.

The business professor also says keep in mind online retailers may change their prices several times in one day.

Busy air travel leading into possible storm

The eastern seaboard has been battling record snowfall this week causing delays and cancellations in air travel.  Mitchell International Airport Spokeswoman Pat Rowe says that includes travelers in Wisconsin especially those who planned on heading home to the east coast by this weekend. Meanwhile the Milwaukee airport is “paying very close attention” to a storm expected to arrive in Wisconsin on Christmas Eve.

If you suspect a delay for a flight that you or someone you know plan on taking, Rowe says it’s best to check the airline’s website for information. She says during busy time the carrier’s phone lines may get tied up.

The busiest holiday travel day at the airport is expected to be Wednesday December 23rd with an estimated 19,000 passengers.

Wrapping presents before you travel may seem like a great way to save time on the other end. But Rowe says don’t bring wrapped gifts, in your carry on or checked baggage, as TSA won’t hesitate to rip off the paper at checkpoints.
