No fireworks for one New Year’s Eve event

It’s a sign of the times, a big New Year’s Eve event in Wisconsin’s capital city drops the fireworks.

It’s not a cost-saving measure, though. In fact, all the money that would have been spent on the elaborate fireworks display at the annual U.S. Bank Eve celebration will instead be given to a local homeless organization in desperate need of the funds.

“It didn’t seem quite right to spend the money on fireworks when we could be donating it to an organization like Porchlight to help the homeless in the community.” [Read more...]

St. Anna mourns fallen firefighter

A tiny community in Calumet County is struggling to come to terms with a firefighter’s death, in the wake of an explosion at an industrial plant which also left nine members of the department injured and much of its equipment damaged.

St. Anna Fire Department Captain Adam Schuh had a difficult time dealing with the death of one of his firefighters, 33 year-old Steve “Peanut” Koeser, during a Wednesday press conference. Schuh said an explosion occurred in a dumpster which was on fire at Bremer Manufacturing, a foundry located in the rural town northwest of Sheboygan. Schuh’s voice cracked and he fought back tears as he offered condolences to Koeser’s family. Schuh said Koeser had been a member of the volunteer department for 15 years. “He was a good firefighter, and he died doing what he loved.” [Read more...]

Asian carp lawsuit a dilemma for Doyle

As states work to stop the spread of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes, Wisconsin continues to ponder its role in the debate.

Several states have filed lawsuits with the US Supreme Court to close the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, where Asian Carp have been found. They’re urging the high court to grant an injunction. Several groups, including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, have called on Wisconsin to join the legal fight. [Read more...]

Killer’s appeal rejected

A man convicted of killing his father and dumping his body in North Carolina has lost an appeal and request for a new trial. The 4th District Court of Appeals rejected all arguments made by the attorney for forty year-old Derek Anderson, who in 2006 was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his father, and sentenced to life in prison. Firefighter killed in explosion

One firefighter was killed and 9-others were injured in an explosion at Calumet County manufacturing plant. The victim was a 33-year old volunteer firefighter. Calumet County Sheriff Gerald Pagel says one of his deputies spotted the fire at Bremer Manufacturing, a foundry near the unincorporated community of St. Anna, at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Pagel said the St. Anna fire department responded and was fighting the fire when the explosion occurred. One other firefighter is reported in critical condition at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah. Five other firefighters were treated at a Chilton hospital, for non-life threatening injuries. There were no employees in the plant at the time of the fire. St. Anna is located about 25 miles northwest of Sheboygan.
