State justices rule against dog-sitter

The state Supreme Court has ruled against a woman in a dog attack case. It doesn’t really matter who let them out, or who owns them. If the dogs are staying under your roof, you’re liable, says the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The ruling stems from a case in Menasha, where a woman allowed a friend and his two dogs stay at her home. The dogs got outside and bit a neighbor, causing injury. The woman’s “bone” of contention: she didn’t own the dogs, so she shouldn’t be responsible. But the justices ruled she was barking up the wrong tree with that assertion, determining that she was “keeper” of the dogs and was thus responsible.

Fall college grads looking for work

Raw milk has real risks, few benefits

Why drink raw milk? Proposed legislation would allow on farm sales of the unpasteurized product, but a University of Wisconsin expert says the risks of drinking it outweigh the benefits. Scott Rankin, an associate professor of food science, says that while he drank raw milk as a child in California’s dairy country, he doesn’t recommend it. Just what are the supposed benefits? “It’s a raw product, and if you routinely ingest it, there is some evidence to suggest that your immune system is stronger,” Rankin says. He understands the appeal, especially at a time when raw foods are increasingly popular. “If we all ate nothing but highly processed snack food, that wouldn’t be a healthful diet. I think there’s a trend to swing way in the opposite direction and eating nothing but the freshest, most unprocessed foods available, and I think raw milk fits into that category.” [Read more...]

Budget repair could be needed in 2010

The nation’s economy is showing signs of recovery, but troubled financial times are far from over.

To help weather the storm, the $62 billion state budget plan adopted last June was designed to plug a $6.6 billion and help protect state programs that the financially troubled would need. Governor Jim Doyle says whether that plan will hold up until the end of the biennium remains unknown though. [Read more...]

Politics changing in D.C.

A Wisconsin Congressman predicts a shift in the political climate around the nation’s capitol.

U.S. Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) says the differences between Republicans and Democrats right now go well beyond the policies being debated in Washington. He says the ideology behind many of the key issues in D.C. is an argument over whether the nation should be controlled by a collectivist, big central-government system. [Read more...]
