Doyle seeks federal funds for education

Governor Jim Doyle is seeking $254-million from the Race to the Top fund. To be eligible for the money, Doyle says all districts must commit to adopt higher standards of education and be part of the statewide data system.

And, Doyle says, the six biggest school districts — Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Racine, Kenosha and Beloit — must offer certain measures to address the achievement gap, including four-year old kindergarten, smaller class rooms, and teacher mentoring.

An education reform bill calling for the Milwaukee Mayor to take control of the city’s school district has not passed through the state legislature, and therefore is not mentioned in this application being submitted to the federal government. [Read more...]

Smoke alarms are easy to find in homes across Wisconsin, and a state lawmaker wants carbon monoxide detectors to be just as prevalent. Legislation being considered at the Capitol would require the devices to be installed in every home, similar to the existing requirement for smoke alarms. [Read more...]

Big Janesville pot bust

Janesville police say they stopped a marijuana growing operation Tuesday night. It was a big bust, one that could significantly reduce available pot on the street.

Officers serving a search warrant seized 147 pot plants with a street value of about $75,000. Police say they found an elaborate growing system, mainly in the home’s basement, consisting of a growing area, drying room and an exhaust system. [Read more...]

Bucks pick up rare road victory

The Milwaukee Bucks won for just the 4th time in 15 road games this season, knocking off the NBA’s worst team, the New Jersey Nets 98-76 in East Rutherford, NJ on Tuesday night.

Andrew Bogut scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and Carlos Delfino added 17 for the Bucks, who won their second straight.

Former Buck Yi Jianlian had 22 points to lead the Nets, (3-31) who have dropped 31 of their first 34 games this season.

Bucks guard Michael Redd scored nine points and surpassed former Buck Bob Dandridge and into fourth place on the all-time franchise scoring list.

The Bucks are off until Friday night when they host division rival Chicago at the Bradley Center.

Packers’ Matthews finishes 3rd in rookie race

Clay MatthewsSome thought a franchise rookie record 10 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries (1 for TD), 58 tackles, 35 quarterback hits, 1 forced fumble and 6 passes broken up would have been plenty to get Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews (pictured) the NFL’s defensive rookie of the year award.  But the award instead went to his former college teammate at USC, Brian Cushing of Houston.

Cushing was a four-year starter and a second-team All-American last season at USC.  He totalled an AFC high 134 tackles, 4 interceptions and 5 quarterback sacks.

Matthews was overshadowed by Cushing and Rey Maualuga while playing at USC.

Buffalo safety Jarius Byrd finished 2nd in the balloting.
