Soldiers headed home

Soldiers in a large Wisconsin National Guard unit are officially done with their mission in Iraq.

Members of the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team formally transferred power to their successors from the Texas National Guard earlier this week. Lieutenant Colonel Jackie Guthrie says now they all have to make their way to Kuwait, the staging area for troops to leave Iraq. [Read more...]

Study warns of future deficit

A new report warns that Wisconsin could face a $2.2 billion deficit heading in the next state budget.

The study conducted by former state Revenue Secretary Rick Chandler was based on estimates of the state seeing normal revenue growth of about 3.2-percent heading into the 2011-2013 budget. He says those reasonable levels would leave the state facing a deficit, even if most agency budgets were frozen and education, medical assistance, and corrections only saw modest increases. Feingold: Open up health care talks

One of Wisconsin’s own US Senators says the public should see the health care talks. In an effort to speed up passage, President Obama and Congressional leaders are proposing finalizing the health care bill behind closed doors. Senator Russ Feingold, a long time open government advocate, says a lack of public debate is “always a factor” in how he’ll act on the legislation.

Arrest made in murder of Altoona woman

Police have made an arrest in an Eau Claire County murder case.

The live-in boyfriend of a 43-year-old Theresa Still has been arrested. Police arrested Greg Gubernot early Friday morning in Forest County in northeastern Wisconsin.

Still was least seen in Altoona December 27th. Her body was found in a wooded area of Adams County 80 miles away, three days later. The cause of death was ruled “complex homicidal violence.”

Gubernot had been named as the only person of interest in the case, although he was not been in custody. Police said he was cooperating with investigators.

H1N1 claims three more lives

The H1N1 flu virus continues to make its presence known in Wisconsin.

State health officials say three more people have died from the virus in the past week, bringing the statewide total up to 50 deaths since last April. The latest were in West Allis and Appleton, along with one in Winnebago County. [Read more...]
