Feingold warns of lawless Supreme Court decision

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to release a decision which could gut the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. And that could mean even more media advertising in congressional and presidential campaigns, paid for by powerful interests.

How far will the justices go? Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold fears it could be pretty far. “If they overturn a hundred years of laws, it means that corporations or unions can just open their treasuries . . . and just completely buy up all the television time, and drown out everyone else’s voices,” Feingold said Monday in Racine.

Wisconsin Marine killed in Afghanistan

A family member says a Wisconsin Marine was killed in Afghanistan Sunday when the vehicle he was riding in hit a roadside bomb during a patrol. According to Bob Worzalla of Racine, his grandson, 20 year-old Jacob Meinart died at a hospital after the explosion, which also killed a British newsman and an Afghan soldier.

Meinart attended schools in Racine until about age 15, when he moved to Ft. Atkinson with his mother. Worzalla says his grandson, who he called “a real patriot,” joined the Marines when he was 17 and shipped out when he was 18, following in his grandfather’s footsteps. Funeral services for Jacob Meinart are pending.

Badgers lose second leading scorer

Jon LeuerA major blow to the Badger men’s basketball team, who just knocked off fourth ranked and previously unbeaten Purdue on Saturday.

Wisconsin junior forward Jon Leuer (pictured) injured his left wrist in Saturday’s game.  Leuer was injured early in the first half as he tried to break his fall.

An x-ray after the game revealed a fracture of a bone in his wrist and he is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow (Tuesday).  No timetable has been set for his return.

What happened to the “sure thing” Packers?

Aaron RodgersI could see Kurt Warner’s huge passing day coming, but I didn’t see the 2nd ranked Green Bay Packers defense not being able to at least slow down the Cardinals.  Instead, they were completely run over in a 51-45 overtime loss to the Cardinals in the highest scoring playoff game ever played in the NFL.

The Packers entered the game Sunday #1 in the NFL in rushing defense and they surrendered 156 yards on the ground.  Green Bay was #2 in overall defense (yards allowed) and they gave up 531 total yards.  Kurt Warner passed for 379 yards and five touchdowns (29 of 33) and amassed a passer rating of 154.1. Lasee will not run again

After nearly 36 years in the Legislature, state Senator Alan Lasee (R-De Pere) has decided to step down when his term in office ends next year.

Lasee says it’s a decision that he gave very serious consideration. But, now that he’s over 70-years-old, he thinks it’s time for somebody else to do the job. [Read more...]
