Indian logos, mascots at schools get public hearing

State lawmakers hear six hours of public testimony about whether Wisconsin school districts could continue to use Indian nicknames, logos and mascots. Milwaukee Democrat State Senator Spencer Coggs is cosponsor of the legislation.

Possible plea deal for troubled lawmaker

The Portage Daily Register reports that state Representative Jeff Wood (I-Chippewa Falls) has reached a plea deal in one of the three alleged cases of driving under the influence.

Wood reportedly will plead no contest in Columbia County this coming April to charges of third-offense operating under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia. Other charges, including one for marijuana possession, would be dropped as part of the agreement. [Read more...]

More 32nd troops returning

Three more flights of soldiers deployed with the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team will be arriving in Wisconsin soon. According to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs, one flight on Thursday will include soldiers mostly from Company B, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, Green Bay; Company B (Support Maintenance), 257th Brigade Support Battalion, Kenosha; and some members of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 105th Cavalry, Madison and Troop C, Reedsburg. A second flight includes troops mostly from Company C, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, Fond du Lac; and some member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, Appleton and Clintonville. UWEC student faces child porn charges

A student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faces charges of possession of child pornography, following a search of computers in his on-campus residence. Nicholas A. Grames was arrested after agents from the Wisconsin Department of Justice-Division of Criminal Investigation and officers from UW-Eau Claire Police Department served a search warrant at the Towers Residence Hall-North on Sunday.
