At least one Wisconsin resident was still missing in Haiti as of last night, as dozens from the Badger State turned up amid the chaos of the earthquake. 20-year-old Melissa Elliott of the Waukesha County town of Merton remains unaccounted for.
A closer look at Medicaid spending
With $5.9-billion-dollars spent this fiscal year, Wisconsin’s Medicaid programs are one of the largest expenditures in the current state budget.
As a result, state Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) is among several lawmakers who want an audit done on that spending. She says there’s nothing more important than making sure those who rely on the programs and the taxpayers who support them are getting their money’s worth. [Read more...]
The challenge of returning to civilian life
All this month, Wisconsin National Guard members will be returning home from Iraq, and it can present a challenge to young families where the father or mother has been gone to war for 10 months.
Laura Pettersen is with the UW Extension’s “Operation Military Kids,” which helps families make that transition. She says they need a great deal of support during that time of reunification, which they hope to provide while helping them become a full family again.
Roughly 3,200 Wisconsin National Guard members have been in Iraq since last spring and are now returning home. It was the largest deployment of troops from the Badger State since World War II.
