Doyle: MPS governance key to Race to the Top (video)

Governor Jim Doyle says Wisconsin’s application for $245 million in federal Race to the Top education funding has been completed ahead of schedule, and that getting a controversial change to the governance of the Milwaukee Public Schools will be critical to the success of the state’s application.

 

During a press conference at Glacial Drumlin middle school in Cottage Grove, Doyle and Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Tony Evers said more than 431 school districts and charter schools are supporting the state’s application effort, in what Doyle says will be extremely competitive process with other states. “Believe me, every one of those states has good applications,” said Doyle. Breaking down Haiti’s earthquake

Despite Haiti being on a major fault line seismic activity has not been active there on a mass scale. “I believe the last major earthquake in Northern Haiti was at least 100 years ago,” says UW-Madison Geophysics professor Clifford Thurber.

Haiti is situated on a strike-slip fault between two great plates of the earth’s crust. The island nation was rocked by a 7.0 earthquake Tuesday which Thurber says is comparable to the “World Series” quake seen in Santa Cruz, California in 1989.

Seized dogs returned to owner

Thirty-one dogs taken from an unheated store-front in Oak Creek were returned to their owner yesterday, after police decided not to seek criminal charges. A 57-year-old Milwaukee woman took back the Jack Russell terriers, after she paid $9,200 for their care and treatment after they had been seized. Police were tipped off about the dogs on January fifth, and they were taken the next day.

A razor thin recovery

A Wisconsin economist says the state’s economic recovery will closely mirror what happens at the national level. A great deal of uncertainty remains, according to University of Wisconsin School of Business Dean Michael Knetter. “Certainly a bottom’s been reached, but I would say that this is one of those periods in our economic history where there’s probably more uncertainty about the nature about the nature of this recovery than I’ve seen since I’ve been a practicing economist watching the economy,” Knetter told WisconsinEye. Badger women bump off Michigan State

Freshman Taylor Wurtz continues to make a difference for the  Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team.  Wurtz came off the bench to score 16 points and lead Wisconsin to a 48-45 win over #20 Michigan State in East Lansing.

Wisconsin (14-4, 4-3 Big Ten) trailed 39-25 but closed with a 23-6 run. 

Teah Gant and Alyssa Karel added 10 points for the Badgers.
