Badger women’s hoops team stays hot in the Big Ten

The Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team ran their win streak to 4-straight games, knocking off Illinois 63-51 before 8,097 at the Kohl Center in Madison on Sunday.

Wisconsin got a career high 23 points from Tara Steinbauer as the Badgers improved to 15-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference.  It’s the best start for the Badgers under coach Lisa Stone.

Layoff doesn’t hurt Marquette

After an 8-day layoff, the Marquette Golden Eagles returned to Big East Conference action by pounding Providence 93-63 at the Bradley Center on Sunday.

Maurice Acker scored 15 of his 23 in the second half and Darius Johnson-Odom had 20 of his 22 in the first half and the Golden Eagles hit 13 three-pointers.  Lazar Hayward added 22 points for Marquette (11-6, 2-3 Big East).

Providence struggled offensively and lost their leading scorer and rebounder, Jamine Peterson, who was ejected late in the first half.

MLK Day offers another reason to serve

As we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., many folks in Wisconsin hope to volunteer their time and service in his honor. Gloria Nikolas, program development and training officer, with Serve Wisconsin, says you can look to your community organizers for ideas on helping others.

Following last week’s earthquake, the devastation in Haiti is on top of everyone’s mind. And Nikolas says there are many ways we can help Haitians, no matter how big or small — whether flying to that country or texting $10 on your phone. (HAITI to 90999.)

Nikolas says people should follow the lead of the slain political activist, as we observe the 81th anniversary of his birth. King was assassinated in 1968.

The U.S. holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year; King’s birthday was January 15. Because MLKjr Day is a federal holiday, there is no mail. Banks, the stock market, libraries and schools are closed.

Lawmakers want restriction on ticket sellers

Officials with the Milwaukee Brewers want lawmakers to help them stop aggressive ticket sales at sporting events.

There currently is a designated area outside Miller Park for fans to unload extra tickets. However, Brewers general counsel Marti Wronski says that’s not stopping some ticket re-sellers from going after fans all around the ball park. She says the ball club receives multiple complaints every season from fans who say they are stalked by professional ticket sellers roaming the parking lots outside the field. [Read more...]

Tax season gets underway

There’s still a few month until your taxes are due, but federal officials say they’re already set up to begin accepting returns.

The electronic system for filing federal tax returns is now up and running for the year. Angela Kraus with the IRS says e-file and free-file continue to grow in popularity, although some Wisconsin taxpayers still shy away from the technology.

Nearly 2.6 million Wisconsinites filed online with the federal government last year. However, Kraus says another 600,000 who qualified to use the online system chose to file a paper return instead. She says those who file online typically see their refund come much quicker and have the added security of not having to mail a paper return.

Kraus says e-file is available for just about everyone in Wisconsin, while free-file can been used by those who make under $57,000 a year. Taxpayers who want to file electronically this year should look on the IRS website for companies that offer approved software.

Even if someone else prepares your taxes, Kraus says you can still ask them to use e-file.
