A federal antitrust lawsuit will seek to undo Dallas, Texas-based Dean Foods‘ acquisition of Wisconsin-based Foremost Farms USA‘s consumer products division. U.S. Department of Justice antitrust regulators say the deal eliminates substantial competition in milk sales in three states. Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen joined his counterparts in Michigan and Illinois in the lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in Milwaukee. “Given the importance of dairy to our state, it is vital that consumers have choices when it comes to their milk purchases and that farmers have options when selling their milk to processors,” Van Hollen said. Ratings system proposed for child care providers
Parents shopping around for licensed day care facilities could soon have some extra help finding the right one, under a ratings system being proposed by the Governor.
The Youngstar quality ratings system would score child care providers based on their learning environment, business practices and the well being of the children. Providers would be ranked on a five star scale, with a two star rating being about average for most. [Read more...]
Hemp bill clears panel
A legislative panel is moving toward allowing farmers to grow industrial hemp, a crop that used to be big in Wisconsin before the War on Drugs. Louie Molepske Jr. (D-Stevens Point) is behind the effort which was approved by the Assembly Agriculture Committee Thursday.
Rink construction at Camp Randall starts Saturday
As the 3rd ranked Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team hosts top ranked Denver inside the Kohl Center this weekend, construction crews will begin to transform Camp Randall Stadium into an outdoor rink for the Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Classic on Feb. 6.
Starting Saturday, fans will be able to follow along as the crew builds the foundation, puts up boards, and installs the ice via a live video stream of the entire process on UWBadgers.com. Once the crews finish, fans can check back to the website to view the entire transformation in just a few minutes with a time-lapse video of the whole construction project.
The Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Classic (Feb. 6) features a hockey double-header. The Wisconsin women’s team faces Bemidji State at 2pm followed by the Wisconsin men’s hockey team which faces Michigan at 5pm.
Shocking loss for Green Bay women
After climbing to #14 in the ESPN/USA Today women’s top 25 coaches poll and 17th in the Associated Press top 25, the Green Bay Phoenix suffered a shocking defeat, falling to Loyola (Ill.) 65-63 on Thursday night in Chicago.
It’s Green Bay’s first loss (16-1, 5-1 Horizon League) of the season and ends a 34-game regular season win streak. Loyola’s win also snapped a 35-game losing streak against the Phoenix, dating back to 1995.
Julie Wojta scored 21 points for Green Bay, which went into the night as one of only three unbeaten teams in the country, joining top ranked Connecticut and No. 7 Nebraska.
The Phoenix cut their deficit to 63-61 with 12 seconds left, but the Ramblers Brittany Boeke hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
