Bill would change veterans board representation

Lawmakers seek a more proportionate representation of veterans on the Wisconsin Veterans Affairs Board.

Four state lawmakers are introducing legislation that requires the Board to consist of members from all corners of Wisconsin. Four of the current seven board members live in the Madison area.

“I’m not saying that these folks have done anything wrong, but there are outstanding people that are in the veterans community … you know we feel that some of those outstanding people, whether they be in Wausau or Green Bay or La Crosse or Ashland or Milwaukee even, they deserve to have a chance.” [Read more...]

Judge rejects new trial for Avery

Steven Avery’s request for a new trial has been rejected by a Manitowoc County judge. The Mishicott man was convicted in the 2005 slaying of 24 year-old Theresa Halbach, and sentenced to life without parole.

In arguing for a new trial, attorneys for the 47 year-old Avery alleged his previous trial was marred by procedural errors. They said one juror was granted dismissal, even though deliberations had already begun. They also said the juror didn’t give a strong enough reason, to justify dismissal. But Judge Patrick Willis ruled Monday that the court used its best discretion when dismissing the juror, who said the trial was putting strain on his marriage. Packer fans, open your wallets

Mark MurphyThe Green Bay Packers announced over the weekend that season ticket prices are going up for the 2010 season.  The increase averages $9 per ticket with a range of $8 to $11, depending on the section in the stadium bowl.  It’s the first increase since 2007.

Team president and CEO Mark Murphy said it’s a difficult decision to reach, in light of recent economic conditions.  But after considerations, Murphy said they felt it was necessary for the competitiveness of the franchise.

Taylor leads Badgers comeback

Jordan TaylorThe Wisconsin Badgers are in a shooting slump, but they still managed to pull out a 79-71 overtime victory. 

The Badgers trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half on Sunday afternoon, but pulled themselves back in it, thanks to guard Jordan Taylor.  Taylor scored the final 8 points of regulation to tie the game and then added 10 points in overtime to win it for the Badgers.

Taylor finished with 20 points, including 18 of the teams final 24 points.  Trevon Hughes led the way with 22 as the Badgers added to Penn State’s Big Ten misery.  The Nittany Lions were thinking victory down the stretch, but remained winless in the Big Ten, now 0-7. [Read more...]

Trial begins in triple killing

A jury of nine men and seven women was selected in Kenosha County Monday,  for the trial of a man accused of the brutal deaths of a Rock County woman and her two teen aged children. James Koepp is charged in the deaths of Danyetta Lentz and her children, Scott and Nicole, in January of 2007. The jurors are expected to be sequestered for up to two weeks during the trial. The 50 year-old Koepp was granted a jury from another county based on media coverage of the triple homicide case. [Read more...]
