Tax donor state now on the receiving end

The high speed rail project continues to cause a lot of controversy.

It was announced last week that Wisconsin will get $810 million from the federal government to build high-speed passenger rail service from Milwaukee to Madison. Critics point to the longterm costs, including government subsidies and lack of ridership.

“I think we have to ask ‘what are the costs of bypassing this opportunity?’”

Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council, says highways and airlines are subsidized, too. [Read more...]

Decker still steamed at DNR deer staff

A legislative leader is unhappy with the deer hunt – and DNR staff which oversees it. Back in December, state Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker was publicly calling for the firing of DNR deer management staff. He hasn’t backed off on that, noting recently that his deer camp failed to bag a single deer.

“We’ve had some good years and some bad years, but it’s been really bad, it’s been declining for the last three years,” Decker said during a recent WisPolitics luncheon in Madison. “The DNR wildlife management team, as far as I’m concerned, should just be fired. I think the confidence level in the DNR wildlife management team is at an all time low.” And there’s an economic issue: Decker said unhappy hunters leave deer camp earlier, and that has an impact on the businesses which serve them.

State teams suffer Horizon League losses

Both Wisconsin men’s teams in the Horizon League suffered home losses on Sunday.  Milwaukee‘s 73-66 loss to Butler (18-4, 11-0) was no surprise, but Green Bay’s 84-79 setback against Valparaiso at the Resch Center in Green Bay was a shocker.

Valparaiso trailed by 8 points with just under 5-minutes to play, but scored on their final eight possessions to comeback and win.  Five of the eight possessions resulted in three-point field goals.

Unlike earlier in the season, Green Bay’s defense was no where to be found and it cost the Phoenix (15-9, 7-5) their 5th conference loss.  [Read more...]

Woodson named to NFL’s All-decade team

The National Football League (NFL) announced it’s All-Decade team on Sunday, in conjunction with the NFL Pro Bowl game in Miami.

Green Bay Packers defensive back Charles Woodson is the only current member of the Packers on the squad.

Former Packers’ safety Darren Sharper was also voted to the team.

Bill Belichick and Tony Dungy were selected as the best coaches of the decade.

Rodgers throws 2 TD passes in Pro Bowl loss

Aaron RodgersThe AFC knocked off the NFC 41-34 in Sunday’s NFL Pro Bowl game in Miami.

Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers started in his Pro Bowl debut, completing 15 of 19 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns.  Rodgers led the NFC to points on all three of his drives.  He left the game with the NFC leading 17-14.

Two other Packers played in the game, linebacker Clay Matthews and safety Nick Collins.  Matthews recorded one solo tackle on defense and added a special teams tackle.  Collins also started and collected four tackles.

Both the NFC and AFC tallied more than 400 passing yards in the game, which drew more than 70,000-thousand fans for the game, which is the largest crowd to see a Pro Bowl game since the game in 1959 in Los Angeles.

Editors note:  Nearly 40% of those originally voted to play in this game, didn’t.  Some because of injuries and some others are getting ready for next week’s Super Bowl.   No all-star game is perfect and generally lacks firepower.  And you can put the NFL Pro Bowl among those that made you want to turn to something else.

I don’t have the answer, but I do know this, the NFL needs to come up with something to make this game more viewable.  Moving it to 1-week before the Super Bowl isn’t the answer.
