Cigarette tax revenues get snuffed out

Smokers are apparently finding ways to avoid Wisconsin’s cigarette tax.

It’s now estimated the 75-cent a pack tax that took effect in September will generate $92 million less revenue for the state than originally projected. Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance President Todd Berry says that’s not a big surprise. He says the hike gave the Badger State one of the highest tobacco taxes in the nation, and also the Midwest. DATCP looks for feedback on puppy mill rules

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection is preparing to implement new rules governing dog breeders.

DATCP spokeswoman Donna Gilson says the law has been a long time in the making, and will bring large scale dog breeders under regulation and licensing requirements. It will apply to breeders selling more than 25 dogs a year, along with retail facilities that sell animals. [Read more...]

Lawmaker pushes for expanding juvenile courts

A proposal at the Capitol would allow 17-year-olds to again face charges in juvenile court.

Currently, 17-year-olds charged with a crime are tried in adult courts in Wisconsin. The move came about in the mid-1990s, after concerns were raised about the increasingly violent nature of some offenders and concerns that the juvenile system was not enough to protect the public. [Read more...]
