Public testimony at capitol hearing gets emotional

A bill would create tougher penalties in situations where an offender causes injury to a law enforcement officer while resisting, obstructing, or attempting to flee. Deputy Dale Veto with the Dane County Sheriff’s Department has been working in law enforcement for approximately 25 years.

Veto testifies about a life-changing incident in March of 2008 in broad daylight near Madison. It involved a high-speed chase with a reckless 15-year old driver in a stolen vehicle. Veto’s squad was parked nearby, as he monitored the situation on the radio. He recalls putting down the road spikes and within an instant the car’s driver deliberately turned toward him at a high rate of speed and struck him down. [Read more...]

Bill would restrict media access to 911 audio

Nearly two years after the murder of a UW Madison student in her off campus apartment, the case is having repercussions on who may hear 911 calls, as proposed legislation would keep 911 tapes off the air in Wisconsin. State Representative Amy Sue Vruwink (D-Miladore) drafted the bill (AB-612) in response to concerns from the families of slain UW student Brittany Zimmerman and her fiancee. “In the case of the murder of Brittaney Zimmerman, these audio tapes only served as the fuel for the sensationalistic coverage of the crime, while causing family and friends . . . to relive the crime, again and again,” Vruwink told the Assembly Personal Privacy Committee. Mom, toddler survive being struck by driver

A Fond du Lac toddler survived being struck and dragged by an elderly driver Wednesday, an incident police say is likely to raise debate about testing of older drivers.

Two year-old Erin Konen was dragged about 70 feet after an 88-year-old woman struck her and her mother Heather in a downtown crosswalk Wednesday morning. Erin is in fair condition at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, while her mom suffered only minor injuries. Police Captain Steve Klein says driver Helen Immel apparently didn’t realize she’d hit anyone. Immel was cited for failing to yield the right of way causing injury and inattentive driving. Klein says if a driver’s ability to drive is hindered by medical or physical conditions, officers can send a report to the State’s Department of Transportation asking for a review.

The Badgers feel Allen could be the one player in the tackle group that could contribute right away as a freshman.  His family has ties to the UW.  Allen’s uncle was a football letter winner in 1980 and ’81 at Wisconsin.  His grandfather was a six-time All-American swimmer at UW from 1956 to 1959.

Wisconsin is losing reserve offensive lineman and Sturgeon Bay, WI native Jake Bscherer.  Bscherer started three games at left guard and three games at right tackle last season.  Bscherer was looking for more playing time and that’s not in the future in Madison.
