Accused killer seeks to change guilty plea

A man charged with the stabbing death of a Wausau area gas station clerk has changed his mind about his guilty plea. Derek Domke of Tomahawk says he didn’t understand terms of his plea bargain. He claims his trial lawyer didn’t fully explain all legal options available to him, but the attorney testified Wednesday that he gave proper details to his client.

School staff circulates “adult” content

The Middleton-Cross Plains School District has disciplined a nine staff members and one administrator after the discovery of an email containing “adult content”. Administrators found what they considered to be inappropriate messages from one middle school teacher, who was suspended on unpaid leave. That prompted a district-wide investigation, in which several other violations were discovered, most of them among the Middleton High School staff. Seven high school teachers are also in trouble, and one substitute teacher was let go.

Doyle: Wisconsin a leader in clean energy investment

Governor Jim Doyle continues to push for green jobs and energy efficiency, while plugging efforts so far. Doyle says with federal stimulus funding the state has created the “green to gold” program, in which Wisconsin’s biggest manufactures have borrowed $20 million to become more energy efficient.

Dough for snow

Winter in Wisconsin provides many opportunities for downhill skiing, and the industry helps to attract millions of tourist to the state dollars each year. However, state Representative Roger Roth (R-Appleton) says many resorts are facing extra costs because of below-average snowfalls in recent years. He says they’ve been forced to rely more on snow-making equipment, which can be expensive to operate. [Read more...]

Ready for a big Birkie

A record number of cross country skiers have registered for the American Birkebeiner in northern Wisconsin later this month. Cherie Morgan, media coordinator for the Birkebeiner/Kortelopet races, says organizers set a cap of 7500 racers to assure a quality event this year. That number was reached last weekend, so the time for registration fees to be received was held open until Wednesday afternoon. With those final entrants, Morgan says they’re expecting 7900, the most skiers ever for the 50 kilometer Birkie and shorter 23 kilometer Kortelopet. [Read more...]
