A great win for the Saints and their fans

Based on the way the regular season went, the Saints and Colts both deserved to be squaring off in Super Bowl 44.  Those that thought the Colts would prevail were running about 2 to 1 before the game.  If I would have placed a wager, which I didn’t, I would have bet on the Colts.  That’s why I don’t gamble, because it was the underdog Saints that won yesterday’s Super Bowl 31-17. 

The Colts jumped out to a 10-0 lead and then allowed the Saints to pull back in it.  It was 10-6 Indy at halftime and the Saints surprised everybody by pulling off an onside kick to start the third quarter.  Former Badger star Jonathan Casillas recovered the onside kick for the Saints, who went on to score a touchdown. Proposing a penny for kids and schools

Could a one cent sales tax increase close the funding gap for public schools in Wisconsin? Tom Beebe with the Wisconsin Alliance for Excellent Schools thinks a penny more in the sales tax will help schools maintain programs and services they may otherwise have to have to cut because of a decrease in state aid. “Right now we need to address the crisis created in the last state budget,” says Beebe, who calls the proposal “the most expedient way possible to get the job done as quickly as possible.” [Read more...]

Badger women’s hockey team splits with Bemidji State

Camp Randall ClassicThe Wisconsin Badger women’s hockey team split their 2-games with Bemidji State over the weekend. 

The Badgers beat the Beavers 6-1 in the first game of the Camp Randall Hockey Classic on Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall Stadium.

Despite outshooting Bemidji State 36-20 in the second game on Sunday, the Badgers were shutout 2-0.  It’s the 6th shutout of the season for Bemidji State (9-14-7, 8-9-7 WCHA).

Wisconsin (16-11-3, 13-10-1) finished 0 for 4 on the power play.

Stricker wins in Los Angeles

Madison’s Steve Stricker entered the final round of the PGA‘s Northern Trust Open with a 5-shot lead.  Stricker increased is advantage to 6-shots before Luke Donald decided to make a run.  Donald closed to within 2-shots before Stricker regathered himself and held on for the win.

The tournament ended Sunday with Stricker in the winners circle and in tears after his 4th win in his last 15 appearances.

Stricker moved into the second spot in the world golf rankings and earned $1.15-million for first place.  Stricker said it means a lot to be a part of history.

Mark Wilson of Menomonee Falls finished at 1-over, 17-shots off the lead.

Badger women’s hoops fall at Purdue

Chelsea Jones of Purdue hit a jumper with 3 seconds left to give the Boilermakers a 58-56 win over the Wisconsin Badgers in West Lafayette, Ind.

Wisconsin led, 56-53, with 1:46 to play, but Purdue’s Brittany Rayburn hit a three-pointer with 57-seconds left to tie the game 56-56.  The Badgers had a couple more chances before Jones late heroics for Purdue.

The loss dropped the Badgers to 7-6 in the Big Ten and 17-7 overall.
