Say cheese for Wisconsin’s state snack

Picture 2Wisconsin cheese is the topic of discussion at the state Capitol.

It’s “nacho” average legislation. State Senator Jim Sullivan (D-Wauwatosa) is sponsoring a bill (SB-327) to designate Wisconsin cheese as the official state snack, further hammering home Wisconsin’s claim as America’s Dairy State. Looming battle over green jobs bill

There’s a battle shaping up at the Capitol over green jobs legislation. As hearings continue at the Capitol on a Democrat proposed “green jobs” bill for Wisconsin, Republicans continue to raise concerns. “This is a piece of policy that Spencer Black, after serving fourteen years in the minority, is going to go out and see passed the way he wants to see it passed,” state Assembly Minority Leader, Representative Jeff Fitzgerald, told the Wisconsin Counties Association on Wednesday. “When you are going to put Wisconsin at a disadvantage to other surrounding states, you’re going to have a huge problem,” said Fitzgerald, noting that the Clean Energy Jobs bill mandates 25 percent renewable energy in Wisconsin by the year 2025. “That costs money,” he said. Enviro groups say carp plan falls short

An environmental group is critical of the latest strategy to keep the Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes. Following Monday’s White House “carp summit” of Great Lakes governors, the Asian Carp Workgroup released a document outlining strategy for fighting the invasive fish. Natural Resources Defense Council attorney Tom Cmar says the document fails to address specific short and long term strategies which could keep the carp out of Lake Michigan. The plan does not, for example, call for an immediate closure of the locks on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, something the governors and attorneys general of most Great Lakes states have been requesting. Fall turkey hunt numbers down

DNR officials say hunters harvested fewer turkeys and they sold fewer license during last fall’s hunt. DNR ecologist Scott Hull says a lack of interest and poor brooding conditions for the past two years led to the disappointing numbers. He says the harvest was down by more than 2,000 birds, and about 7,600 fewer hunters were in the woods compared to the fall of 2008 season. [Read more...]

Brewers sign potential relief help

Left handed reliever Scott Schoeneweis has agreed to a minor league contract with the Brewers.  The deal includes an invitation to major league spring training.

Schoeneweis has played for six major league teams and was 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in 45 relief appearances with Arizona last season.

Schoeneweis is 46-57 lifetime with a 4.97 ERA in his 11-major league seasons.

He’s scheduled to get a 1-year, $800,000 deal if he makes the 40 man roster and another potential $700,000 in performance bonuses.
