Assembly to attempt override of Doyle veto

Legislative leaders in the state Assembly say they still see a need for legislation that would strip the governor of his authority to appoint the Department of Natural Resources Secretary.

Lawmakers approved legislation last fall that would have put the decision in the hands of the Natural Resources Board, rather than the governor’s office. Governor Jim Doyle vetoed the measure, saying the current system puts the power of his office behind the DNR, allowing it to accomplish more effective changes in environmental policy. [Read more...]

Another bacterial meningitis death in Dane County

A Mount Horeb teen died over the weekend from a case of bacterial meningitis; the second such death in Dane County this month. A 22-year-old UW-Madison student was also killed by the illness at the beginning of February.

Dane County Public Health Director Dr. Thomas Shlenker says there’s nothing linking the two cases to each other. Although such deaths are rare, Shlenker says it appears to be nothing more than a deadly coincidence. [Read more...]

Buy local, spend 10 in 2010

Wisconsin’s Ag Dept is encouraging consumers to buy local.

Cheryl O’Brien says “Spend 10 in 2010″ is an idea she really wanted to promote before her reign as Alice in Dairyland ends in June. She’s encouraging people to spend at least 10% of their food budget on Wisconsin items.

Right now, we spend approximately 1% of our food budgets on local products. [Read more...]

Hockey Badgers sweep Mankato

The 3rd ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team (18-7-4, 13-6-3 WCHA) completed a sweep of the Minnesota State Mavericks (12-16-2, 6-15-1 WCHA) over the weekend. 

The Badgers fell behind in both games and then responded with early comebacks and a pair of wins to move within 3-points of first place in the WCHA with 6-games left to play.

Wisconsin will host No. 4 St. Cloud State next weekend at the Kohl Center.  It marks Wisconsin’s final regular-season home series.

Olympic officials need to proactive in the future

Tragedy hit the Olympics in Vancouver on Friday, after 21 year old Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed in a practice crash. 

Kumaritashvili died after being thrown from his sled at nearly 90 mph and catapulted into an exposed steel beam. 

His death shook up many of the competitors, and the entire Olympic family.  It caused Olympic officials to consider canceling the Luge event.  Instead it was decided that the games would go on, but they’d go on with the course altered to avoid further tragedy. [Read more...]
