Hoewisch is Horizon League women’s Player of the Week

Green Bay Phoenix junior Celeste Hoewisch has been named Horizon League women’s basketball player of the week.

The former Hortonville star scored a career best 23 points in Saturday’s win over rival UW-Milwaukee.  Hoewisch is averaging 13.5 points a game this season.  She also helped the Phoenix win their 20th game of the season.  The Phoenix have won 20 or more games now for 11 straight years.

Voters decide on cutting sports, after school programs

There are no statewide contests happening in todays primary races but a southern Wisconsin school district has a lot at stake.  On the ballot is a $3.5 million referendum for the Brodhead School District.  Superintendent Chuck Deery says without the funding nearly a dozen teachers and staff would be let go. All extracurricular activities and sports would also be eliminated. The district is concerned about a mass exodus of students if that were to happen.

Panthers squeak by Penguins in Horizon League

The UW-Milwaukee Panthers nearly blew a 13-point lead with just over 2 1/2 minutes left, but held on to beat Youngstown State 64-62 in men’s Horizon League action. 

The Panthers lead was down to one, with UWM’s Ryan Haggerty at the free throw line.  He missed the first and Panthers coach Rob Jeter was yelling for Haggerty to miss the second on purpose to possibly have more time go off the clock before the Penguins could attempt a game winning shot.  The problem is, Haggerty made the second free throw. Badgers drop 3-spots in Top 25 polls

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team split their two games in Big Ten play last week and fell 3-spots in the top 25 polls as a result. 

The Badgers dropped from 11th to 14th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and from 13th to 16th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.

The Badgers return to action Thursday night when they travel to Minnesota to face the Gophers.

Leuer returns back to practice with Badgers

Jon LeuerWisconsin’s Jon Leuer was cleared to practice yesterday (Monday), for the first time since breaking his left wrist back on January 9th. 

The Badgers are 6-3 in Leuer’s absence, but they may not have to play without him anymore.  The Minnesota native could play Thursday night when the Badgers take on the Minnesota Gophers in Big Ten action.  Leuer said he’s in good shape, but will still have to knock the rust off.

Leuer was averaging 15.4-points and 6.2 rebounds a game prior to the injury.  He said he’s thrilled to be back on the floor.
