Doyle says Obama health insurance reform will help WI families

Governor Jim Doyle is praising the White House effort to advance health care reform. In a conference call from Washington, Doyle touted what he says is a White House health insurance reform plan which will help Wisconsin families. “Normal people . . . earning sixty, seventy thousand dollars with a couple of kids, to go out and try to purchase health insurance on your own is nearly impossible,” Doyle said. “This bill would dramatically help those families.” [Read more...]

Credit card changes should help consumers

New federal regulations on the credit card industry should make it easier for consumers to understand their debt and help provide some extra protections.

The new rules, which took effect Monday, require companies to give better disclosure about interest rate changes. They also extend the time period for paying your monthly bill and make it harder for anyone under 21 to get a card. [Read more...]

WMC drums up signatures against energy bill

The state’s largest business group says thousands have come out against the global warming bill. In an attempt to let state legislators know how strong the opposition was to the governor’s global warming bill, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce contacted their members with an online petition. Nearly a thousand signatures were collected in the first day, with around 3,000 received in four business days, according to WMC Environmental Policy Director Scott Manley who calls the response “very significant.”

Lawmaker makes pitch for corporate democracy

A state lawmaker thinks corporations that get involved in Wisconsin elections should get the okay from their shareholders. And Kenosha Democrat, state Senator Robert Wirch, has put that concept into legislation he’s offering in the wake the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that’s widely seen as opening the floodgates to corporate money in elections. “We’re asking corporations that want to become involved in Wisconsin politics, theoretically with unlimited contributions, to have an election with their shareholders,” said Wirch. “I’m not sure when you buy a stock of a company you’re considering the political ramifications if they want to get involved in races,” said Wirch. “This piece legislation will give shareholders a chance to express their views in that area.” [Read more...]

Contenders for governor talk job growth

Fond du Lac was one of the stops this past weekend as Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett campaigns for governor. Barrett, a former Congressman, said his experience running the state’s largest city and in the nation’s capitol give him the experience to lead Wisconsin. The Democratic candidate’s top priority is creating more jobs, which he said Milwaukee has had some success in doing as of late.
